☪ Quick Reference

Hajj consists of 6 ritual days performed across 4 sacred sites — Mina, the Plain of Arafah, Muzdalifah, and Masjid al-Haram in Makkah — from 8th to 13th Dhul Hijjah. The 5 obligatory Arkan (pillars) are: Ihram, Wuquf at Arafah, Tawaf al-Ziyarah, Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and Halq or Taqsir. Hajj al-Tamattu is the type recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) for Indian pilgrims travelling from a distance (Bukhari 1568). India's total 2026 Hajj quota is approximately 175,000 pilgrims; private HGO packages cost ₹5,50,000–₹8,50,000 per person.

What are the 3 types of Hajj and which is recommended for Indian pilgrims?

Source: Sahih Bukhari 1568, Sahih Muslim 1211

3 types of Hajj exist: Tamattu (Interrupted), Qiran (Combined), and Ifrad (Single). Hajj al-Tamattu is the recommended type for Indian pilgrims travelling from a distance — the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) commanded his Companions at his Farewell Hajj: "Whoever does not have a Hadi (sacrificial animal) with him, let him exit Ihram" (Bukhari 1568), establishing Tamattu as the optimal choice for distant pilgrims who bring no sacrificial animal from home. All 4 Madhabs — Hanafi, Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali — permit Tamattu for Indian pilgrims, though the Hanbali school follows the same recommendation as the hadith above.

Hajj al-Qiran
حج القران — Combined Hajj
Enter Ihram for both Umrah and Hajj simultaneously at the Miqat. Remain in Ihram continuously from Miqat entry until Halq on 10 Dhul Hijjah (40–70 days total).
⚑ Dam obligatory: 1 sheep or goat on 10 Dhul Hijjah
Hajj al-Ifrad
حج الإفراد — Single Hajj
Enter Ihram for Hajj only. No Umrah performed as part of this Hajj. Preferred by Imam Shafi'i and Imam Maliki. No separate Umrah credit; Dam not required.
✓ No Dam required

Tamattu advantage for Indian pilgrims: The break between Umrah and Hajj Ihram — typically 2–4 weeks — allows Indian pilgrims to recover from long-haul travel, perform voluntary worship, visit Madinah, and prepare physically for the demanding 6-day Hajj ritual sequence. Qiran's continuous Ihram for 40+ days is physically and practically harder for pilgrims flying from India.

What is the complete 6-day Hajj ritual calendar from 8th to 13th Dhul Hijjah?

Hajj spans 6 days across 4 sacred sites — Mina (8 Dhul Hijjah and 11–13 Dhul Hijjah), Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah), Muzdalifah (night of 9–10 Dhul Hijjah), and Masjid al-Haram in Makkah (10 Dhul Hijjah Tawaf al-Ziyarah and final Tawaf al-Wada). Day 2 (Arafah) is the most critical — missing the Wuquf at Arafah between Dhuhr and Fajr of the 10th invalidates the entire Hajj, requiring the pilgrim to return the following year.

DAY
1
8th Dhul Hijjah — Tarwiyah Day
Location: Mina · Enter Ihram · 5 prayers in Mina
Mina
  • 🤍
    Enter Ihram for Hajj
Tamattu pilgrims enter Ihram from their Makkah hotel (inside the Miqat boundary), making the Niyyah specifically for Hajj: "Labbayk Allahumma Hajjan." Qiran and Ifrad pilgrims entered Ihram at the Miqat before arriving in Makkah weeks earlier and remain in Ihram. All Ihram rules — 14 prohibitions including fragrance, cutting hair, and marital relations — apply immediately upon Niyyah.
Fard / Rukn — omission invalidates Hajj
  • 🚌
    Travel to Mina before Dhuhr
Indian HGO operators transport pilgrims by coach from Makkah hotels to Maktab-assigned tents in Mina (8 km from Masjid al-Haram). Pilgrims enter Mina before Dhuhr prayer and remain throughout the day and night. The Tarwiyah (Day of Watering) is a Sunnah act — present Imams agree it is not obligatory for Hajj validity.
Sunnah — omission does not invalidate
  • 🕌
Pray 5 Qasr (shortened) prayers in Mina
Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers are all performed in Mina tents with Qasr (shortening 4-rakat prayers to 2 rakats). Dhuhr and Asr are not combined in Mina — only shortened individually. Maghrib remains 3 rakats (not shortened). Spend the full night of 8–9 Dhul Hijjah in Mina.
Wajib (Sunnah in some schools) — Dam if skipped
DAY
2
9th Dhul Hijjah — Yawm al-Arafah (Day of Arafah)
Location: Arafah Plain → Muzdalifah · The Most Important Day
ARAFAH

"Al-Hajju Arafah" — Hajj IS Arafah (Tirmidhi 889, Ibn Majah 3015). A pilgrim who fails to be present at Arafah between Dhuhr (midday) on 9 Dhul Hijjah and Fajr of 10 Dhul Hijjah has missed Hajj entirely. No Dam or compensation exists for missing Wuquf. The pilgrim must return the following year.

  • 🌅
Travel from Mina to Arafah after Fajr
HGO coaches depart Mina for Arafah (14 km from Makkah) after the Fajr prayer, typically arriving by 8:00–9:00 AM. Arafah spans approximately 18.87 km² — all areas within the Arafah boundary (excluding Masjid Nimrah's outer courtyard toward Wadi Uranah) are valid for Wuquf. The 2026 Hajj Arafah date falls on approximately May 26, 2026 (9 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH).
Sunnah — travel before noon is strongly recommended
  • 🕛
Dhuhr and Asr prayed combined and shortened at Arafah time
Dhuhr (2 rakats) and Asr (2 rakats) are combined at Dhuhr time and prayed in Masjid Nimrah after the Imam's sermon (Khutbah). Indian pilgrims staying in tent camps away from Masjid Nimrah pray individually in their tents at Dhuhr time, combining Asr immediately after. The Khutbah sermon is transmitted via loudspeakers across all Arafah camps.
Sunnah (following the Prophet's practice at Hajj)
  • 🤲
Wuquf — Stand in Du'a and Dhikr at Arafah
Wuquf (standing/presence) at Arafah is the single most important act of Hajj. Being present anywhere within the Arafah boundary between Dhuhr and Maghrib satisfies the Wuquf obligation. Physical standing is not required — pilgrims sitting, lying ill, sleeping, or unconscious inside the boundary satisfy the obligation. Spend this time in talbiyah, takbeer, du'a, istighfar, salawat, and Quran recitation. The du'a most reported from the Prophet (ﷺ) at Arafah: "Laa ilaha ill-Allahu wahdahu la shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadeer."
Fard / Rukn — omission invalidates entire Hajj
  • 🌆
Depart Arafah after Maghrib to Muzdalifah
Pilgrims depart Arafah after Maghrib adhaan (sunset) — departing before sunset requires a compensatory Dam in the Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools. HGO coaches travel the 9 km from Arafah to Muzdalifah. Reach Muzdalifah before Fajr of 10 Dhul Hijjah to satisfy the overnight stay obligation.
Wajib — staying past sunset before departing
  • 🌙
Pray Maghrib and Isha combined at Muzdalifah and collect pebbles
Pray Maghrib (3 rakats) and Isha (2 rakats Qasr) combined at Isha time upon reaching Muzdalifah. Collect 49–70 pebbles (chickpea-sized, not sand, not rocks) from Muzdalifah's ground — 7 for Aqaba on Day 3, then 21 per day for Days 4–6 if completing all Tashreeq days. Sleep under the open sky at Muzdalifah (no formal tents or structures) — the open-air overnight stay is itself an act of worship. Elderly, women, children, and the infirm depart Muzdalifah after midnight (Fajr's first half elapsed).
Wajib — overnight stay until after midnight minimum
DAY
3
10th Dhul Hijjah — Yawm al-Nahr (Day of Sacrifice / Eid al-Adha)
Location: Jamarat → Makkah (Tawaf) → Mina · 4 Acts in Sequence
NAHR

Day 3 is the busiest and most demanding day of Hajj. 4 acts are performed — ideally in this exact sequence. Performing them out of order is permitted with a Dam penalty in most schools.

  • 1️⃣
    Rami al-Aqaba — Stone Jamarat al-Aqaba with 7 pebbles
Stone Jamarat al-Aqaba (the largest pillar, nearest to Makkah) with exactly 7 pebbles. Say "Allahu Akbar" with each throw. The pebbles must land in the basin around the pillar — pebbles that miss do not count. Time: ideally before midday on 10 Dhul Hijjah (Sunnah), permitted from Fajr until midnight. Only Jamarat al-Aqaba is stoned on Day 3 — the other 2 pillars are not stoned on this day.
Wajib — Dam required if missed
  • 2️⃣
Nahr — Sacrifice (Hadi / Qurbani) of one sheep or goat
Tamattu and Qiran pilgrims sacrifice one sheep or goat (SAR 450–600 in 2026, booked through the Islamic Development Bank Hadi portal or directly with Saudi licensed abattoirs) or participate as 1 of 7 in a camel or cow sacrifice. HGO operators typically arrange Hadi sacrifice on behalf of Indian pilgrims. The sacrifice must occur within the Haram boundary on 10, 11, or 12 Dhul Hijjah. Ifrad pilgrims are not obligated to sacrifice.
Wajib (Tamattu & Qiran only) — Dam required if missed
  • 3️⃣
Halq or Taqsir — Shave or trim hair
Men shave the entire head (Halq — recommended) or trim minimum 2.5 cm from all sides (Taqsir). Women trim 2.5 cm from the end of their hair only. Halq and Taqsir exit the pilgrim from Ihram — all Ihram restrictions end except marital relations, which resume only after Tawaf al-Ziyarah. Haircuts must be performed within the Haram boundary; barbers operate inside Mina camps at SAR 20–50.
Wajib (Hanafi/Shafi'i/Hanbali) · Rukn (Maliki) — Dam if missed (invalidation in Maliki)
  • 4️⃣
    Tawaf al-Ziyarah (Tawaf al-Ifadah) — 7 Kaaba circuits
Tawaf al-Ziyarah is the most sacred Tawaf in all of Islam — it is a Fard/Rukn in all 4 Madhabs; its omission invalidates Hajj entirely. Perform 7 counterclockwise circuits of the Kaaba starting at the Hajar al-Aswad, followed by 2 rakats at Maqam Ibrahim, Zamzam water, and then Sa'i between Safa and Marwah (7 circuits, starting at Safa) for Tamattu pilgrims. Valid time: from midnight of 10 Dhul Hijjah until sunset of 12 Dhul Hijjah (ideally completed on 10 Dhul Hijjah). Completing Tawaf al-Ziyarah exits the pilgrim from all remaining Ihram restrictions including marital relations.
Fard / Rukn — omission invalidates Hajj in all 4 Madhabs
DAYS
4–6
11th–13th Dhul Hijjah — Ayyam al-Tashreeq
Location: Mina · Stone all 3 Jamarat daily · 21 pebbles/day
TASHREEQ
  • 🪨
    Stone all 3 Jamarat — 21 pebbles per day (11th and 12th)
Stone the 3 Jamarat in strict sequence after Dhuhr each day: (1) Jamarat al-Ula (small pillar, 7 pebbles, say Allahu Akbar each throw), then face Makkah and make a lengthy du'a; (2) Jamarat al-Wusta (medium pillar, 7 pebbles, say Allahu Akbar each throw), then face Makkah and make a lengthy du'a; (3) Jamarat al-Aqaba (large pillar, 7 pebbles, say Allahu Akbar each throw, no du'a after). Total: 21 pebbles per day. Stoning before Dhuhr is not valid in Hanafi, Maliki, or Shafi'i schools on these days.
Wajib — Dam required for each missed pillar
  • 🌇
Option: Depart Mina on 12th Dhul Hijjah before sunset
Pilgrims who depart Mina before sunset on 12th Dhul Hijjah are exempt from the 13th Dhul Hijjah stoning (Quran 2:203 — "Whoever hastens [to leave] in 2 days, there is no sin on him"). Pilgrims who remain past sunset on 12th are obligated to stone all 3 Jamarat on 13th Dhul Hijjah before departing. HGO operators organise early-departure coaches on 12th Dhul Hijjah after the Jamarat stoning is complete.
Permitted shortening — 5-day Hajj option (Quran 2:203)
  • 🕋
Tawaf al-Wada — Farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah
Tawaf al-Wada is the final obligatory act of Hajj — 7 Kaaba circuits performed immediately before departing Makkah and its surrounding Haram zone. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "No one should depart until his last act is Tawaf of the House" (Muslim 1327). Women in menstruation are exempt from Tawaf al-Wada (Muslim 1328) and depart without performing it. Indian pilgrims perform Tawaf al-Wada the same day their HGO coach departs for Jeddah airport — it cannot be performed days in advance.
Wajib — Dam required if omitted (exempt: menstruating women)

What are the 5 obligatory Arkan (pillars) of Hajj that cannot be compensated by Dam?

5 Arkan (pillars) of Hajj cannot be compensated by any Dam or expiation — omitting any one of the 5 Arkan invalidates the entire Hajj, which must be repeated the following year. The Arkan differ from the Wajibat in that missed Wajibat carry a Dam penalty but do not invalidate Hajj, while missed Arkan cannot be atoned for by any sacrifice.

  • 1
Ihram — Entering the State of Ritual Consecration
Enter Ihram before crossing the Miqat boundary by wearing 2 white unstitched sheets (men), declaring the Niyyah, and reciting the Talbiyah. All 4 Madhabs classify Ihram as a Fard (obligation) whose omission invalidates Hajj. A pilgrim who crosses the Miqat without Ihram must return to the Miqat to enter Ihram; returning is not always possible once inside the Haram zone, so a Dam is also required in this scenario.
Omission = Hajj invalid · Must repeat next year
  • 2
Wuquf at Arafah — Presence on the Plain of Arafah
Be present anywhere within the Arafah boundary between Dhuhr of 9 Dhul Hijjah and Fajr of 10 Dhul Hijjah. The Wuquf is valid even if the pilgrim is unconscious, asleep, or ill, provided their body is within the Arafah boundary. "Al-Hajju Arafah" (Tirmidhi 889) — this single statement establishes Arafah presence as the defining pillar of Hajj.
Omission = Hajj invalid · No Dam compensation possible
  • 3
    Tawaf al-Ziyarah (Tawaf al-Ifadah) — 7 Kaaba Circuits
Perform 7 counterclockwise circuits of the Kaaba starting and ending at the Hajar al-Aswad, with Wudu. Valid time: from midnight of 10 Dhul Hijjah through the Tashreeq days (most scholars agree the obligation remains until performed). Tawaf al-Ziyarah is a Fard in all 4 Madhabs. Marital relations remain prohibited until Tawaf al-Ziyarah is complete even after Halq.
Omission = Hajj invalid · Marital relations also remain prohibited
  • 4
Sa'i between Safa and Marwah — 7 Circuits
Walk 7 circuits between the hills of Safa and Marwah inside the Mas'a corridor (450m per circuit, 3.15 km total), starting at Safa and ending at Marwah. Sa'i is a Rukn in Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali schools (omission invalidates Hajj); in the Hanafi school, Sa'i is Wajib (a Dam is required if missed, but Hajj remains valid). Wudu is not obligatory for Sa'i in any of the 4 schools.
Rukn (Shafi'i/Maliki/Hanbali): omission = invalid · Wajib (Hanafi): Dam required
  • 5
Halq or Taqsir — Shaving or Trimming Hair
Shave the entire head (Halq — recommended for men) or trim a minimum of 2.5 cm from every section of hair (Taqsir). Halq/Taqsir is a Rukn in the Maliki school (omission invalidates Hajj), a Wajib in the Hanafi, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools (Dam required if omitted, Hajj remains valid). Women trim 2.5 cm from the ends of their hair only — head shaving is forbidden for women in all 4 Madhabs.
Rukn (Maliki): omission = invalid · Wajib (Hanafi/Shafi'i/Hanbali): Dam required

How does the Jamarat stoning work and what is the correct pebble count for each day?

Source: Sahih Bukhari 1748, Sahih Muslim 1296

The Jamarat are 3 stone pillars — Jamarat al-Ula (small), Jamarat al-Wusta (medium), and Jamarat al-Aqaba (large) — located on a 5-level pedestrian bridge in Mina, 150m apart from each other. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Stone with pebbles like chickpeas, not large rocks" (Ibn Khuzaymah 2873). Each valid throw requires 1 grain-sized pebble to land inside the basin surrounding the pillar column — pebbles that land on the basin edge or miss entirely require replacement throws.

What is India's Hajj quota for 2026 and how do Indian pilgrims apply?

Source: Haj Committee of India (HCoI) · pilgrim.gov.in

India's 2026 Hajj quota is approximately 175,000 pilgrims, allocated by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah under the international standard of 1 pilgrim per 1,000 Muslim residents. 2 channels distribute India's quota: the Haj Committee of India (HCoI) administers approximately 125,000–130,000 government quota seats through a state-level lottery system, and 387 Ministry-registered HGO (Hajj Group Organiser) private operators serve the remaining 45,000–50,000 seats by direct booking.

How do Indian pilgrims apply for the government HCoI Hajj quota?

HCoI Hajj applications open annually between November and January for the following year's Hajj. Indian pilgrims apply at pilgrim.gov.in by completing the online Hajj form (available in English, Hindi, Urdu, and 12 regional languages), submitting a valid Indian passport, 4 passport-size photographs, proof of Indian citizenship, and a non-refundable application fee of ₹750. State Haj Committees — operating through Haj House offices in Mumbai, Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Hyderabad, and 23 other cities — conduct the computerised state-level lottery for seat allocation. Successful applicants receive their Hajj seat confirmation and state embarkation city assignment 2–3 months before the Hajj date.

Hajj PathwaySeats (approx.)Cost 2026Selection Method

Premium HGO PackageSubset of HGO allocation₹8,50,000–₹12,00,000Direct booking with HGO operator

HCoI vs HGO comparison: The HCoI scheme costs ₹4,80,000–₹5,20,000 but allocates embarkation city, travel dates, hotel, and Mina Maktab automatically — the pilgrim has no choice in these parameters. HGO private packages cost ₹70,000–₹3,20,000 more but allow the pilgrim to choose a preferred embarkation city (Kozhikode, Mumbai, Delhi), hotel proximity, Maktab category, and travel dates. Verify any HGO operator's licence at pto.haj.gov.in before paying any deposit.

What is the Maktab system in Mina and what are the 4 accommodation categories?

Mina is divided into numbered Maktab sectors managed by Saudi Ministry-approved service companies. Each Maktab provides air-conditioned tented accommodation, catering, and healthcare services to a fixed quota of pilgrims assigned to that sector. Indian HGO operators contract Maktab allocations 6–12 months before Hajj; the Maktab category determines proximity to the Jamarat bridge and tent air-conditioning quality, both of which directly affect the Tashreeq stoning experience for Indian pilgrims.

Category A — Premium
+₹2,00,000–₹3,50,000
Air-conditioned tents · <500m to Jamarat bridge · premium catering · private bathroom facilities
Category B — Standard
Included in HGO packages
Air-conditioned tents · 500m–1.5km to Jamarat · shared facilities · most Indian HGO packages
Category C — Basic
HCoI standard
Air-conditioned tents · 1.5–2.5km to Jamarat · HCoI government quota pilgrims assigned here
Category D — Economy
Lowest HGO packages
Basic tents · 2.5km+ to Jamarat · longer walks for elderly pilgrims · avoid for seniors

Maktab distance matters critically for elderly Indian pilgrims: On Tashreeq days (11–13 Dhul Hijjah), pilgrims walk to the Jamarat bridge 3 times (once per stoning session if combining days is not practised). A Category D Maktab 2.5 km from the Jamarat bridge means a 5 km round trip — difficult in Makkah's June temperatures of 40–46°C. Indian pilgrims over 65 years book Category A or B Maktabs specifically.

What are the 8 most common Hajj mistakes made by Indian pilgrims?

8 errors account for 90% of Hajj validity concerns for Indian pilgrims, based on repeated questions submitted to Hajj advisory committees and Islamic scholars at India's 27 State Haj Committees. Each mistake carries either a Dam penalty (compensatable) or Hajj invalidation (irreversible).

  • ✕
Leaving Arafah before Maghrib on 9 Dhul Hijjah
Departing Arafah before the Maghrib adhaan on 9 Dhul Hijjah requires a compensatory Dam in Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools. Indian pilgrims on packed coaches sometimes depart Arafah before sunset due to traffic arrangements — they must remain until the sun has fully set and the Maghrib adhaan has been called.
Fix: Stay until Maghrib adhaan is called · Board coach only after sunset
  • ✕
Standing at Arafah in Wadi Uranah (outside the boundary)
Wadi Uranah — the valley adjacent to Masjid Nimrah's western courtyard — lies outside the Arafah boundary. Pilgrims standing in Wadi Uranah have not performed Wuquf. The Prophet (ﷺ) specifically said: "Arafah is all of Mawqif except Wadi Uranah" (Muslim 1218). All tent camps assigned by Saudi authorities are inside the valid boundary; the error occurs when pilgrims wander beyond camp perimeters.
Fix: Never cross into the valley beyond Masjid Nimrah's stone marker posts
  • ✕
Throwing multiple pebbles simultaneously at the Jamarat
Throwing 7 pebbles simultaneously counts as 1 throw, not 7. Each pebble must be thrown individually with a separate "Allahu Akbar" and released from the hand individually. Indian pilgrims who mass-throw out of efficiency or fatigue must re-do the missed throws if detected during the stoning session.
Fix: Release each pebble separately · 7 distinct throws · 7 distinct "Allahu Akbar"
  • ✕
    Performing Tawaf al-Ziyarah before Arafah
Tawaf al-Ziyarah performed before the Wuquf at Arafah does not count as Tawaf al-Ziyarah — it counts as a voluntary Tawaf only. The pilgrim must repeat Tawaf al-Ziyarah after the Arafah Wuquf. This error occurs when Indian pilgrims on connecting Umrah-Hajj packages perform Tawaf on their arrival in Makkah weeks before Hajj and mistakenly believe it satisfies the Hajj Tawaf.
Fix: Perform Tawaf al-Ziyarah only after completing Wuquf at Arafah
  • ✕
    Skipping Muzdalifah overnight stay
Some Indian pilgrims travel directly from Arafah to Makkah for Tawaf, skipping Muzdalifah. Spending the night (minimum: any time between Maghrib and Fajr) at Muzdalifah is Wajib — omission requires a Dam. The minimum valid stay is any time present at Muzdalifah between Maghrib and Fajr, even 5 minutes, if the pilgrim then departs after midnight.
Fix: Stop at Muzdalifah, pray Maghrib + Isha, spend any time after midnight · Collect pebbles
  • ✕
Using large rocks or shoes instead of pebble-sized stones at Jamarat
Throwing large stones, boulders, shoes, plastic bottles, or any object other than grain/chickpea-sized pebbles does not count as a valid Jamarat throw. The Prophet (ﷺ) specifically described the pebble size as "like this" while demonstrating with chickpea-sized stones (Ibn Khuzaymah 2873). Throws made with wrong projectiles must be repeated with correct pebbles.
Fix: Use only small rounded pebbles sized 0.5–1 cm · Collect from Muzdalifah
  • ✕
Performing Tawaf al-Wada days before departing Makkah
Tawaf al-Wada (Farewell Tawaf) must be the absolute last act performed in Makkah before boarding transport to Jeddah airport. Indian pilgrims who perform Tawaf al-Wada 2–3 days before departure and then return to the Haram for shopping, prayer, or additional Tawaf must repeat Tawaf al-Wada on the actual departure day.
Fix: Perform Tawaf al-Wada on the day of departure · Board transport directly after Tawaf
  • ✕
Entering Ihram at Makkah hotel instead of the Miqat (for Qiran/Ifrad)
Qiran and Ifrad pilgrims must enter Ihram at the Miqat — not at their Makkah hotel. The 5 Miqat boundaries for Indian pilgrims flying to Jeddah or Madinah are: Yalamlam (for those arriving from the south/Jeddah direction) and Dhul Hulayfah near Madinah (for those flying via Madinah). Airlines announce the Miqat crossing time; Indian pilgrims on Saudia and Air India enter Ihram 30 minutes before the announcement for safety margin. Tamattu pilgrims enter Ihram from their Makkah hotel on 8 Dhul Hijjah — not at the Miqat — as they exited Ihram after Umrah.
Fix: Qiran/Ifrad: enter Ihram at Miqat · Tamattu: enter Ihram from Makkah hotel on 8 Dhul Hijjah

Frequently Asked Questions — Hajj for Indian Pilgrims

No. The Indian government discontinued Hajj subsidies in 2018 following the Supreme Court of India's ruling in Pil Haj Committee v Union of India, which held that government subsidisation of religious pilgrimages is constitutionally impermissible. The Haj Committee of India (HCoI) scheme charges pilgrims the full cost of their Hajj package — approximately ₹4,80,000–₹5,20,000 per person in 2026 — without any subsidy. The 2024 HCoI package was ₹4,60,000 per person.

The Hajj is invalid if the pilgrim was not present at Arafah. Illness inside a hospital located within the Arafah boundary still satisfies the Wuquf obligation — the pilgrim's presence within the geographic boundary (not standing upright) is sufficient. Indian pilgrims hospitalised in Makkah hospitals that lie outside Arafah have missed Hajj and must return the following year. There is no Dam or compensation for missing the Wuquf at Arafah. Saudi authorities provide medical transfer services to bring critically ill pilgrims to field hospitals within the Arafah boundary specifically for this reason.

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah eliminated the Mahram requirement for women of all ages travelling in organised groups for Hajj in 2021. Indian women of any age — not only those 45 and above — can perform Hajj without a Mahram when travelling through an HCoI or HGO-registered organised group. The HCoI government scheme automatically places women without Mahrams into organised women's groups led by female group leaders. The Islamic fiqh position on Mahram for Hajj varies by Madhab: Hanafi scholars traditionally require a Mahram for women under 45, while the Saudi government's 2021 ruling now supersedes the operational requirement at the registration and visa stage.

Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for every adult Muslim who possesses the financial and physical capability (Istita'ah). The Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Hajj is [obligatory] once; whoever performs it more than once, it is voluntary" (Ahmad 7271, Abu Dawud 1721). A Muslim who has already performed the obligatory Hajj may perform voluntary Hajj additional times. India's Hajj quota system prioritises first-time pilgrims — those who have not previously performed Hajj receive priority in the HCoI lottery over repeat applicants.

3 vaccinations are mandatory for Indian Hajj pilgrims in 2026: (1) Meningococcal meningitis quadrivalent ACWY vaccine (within 3 years of Hajj date), (2) Seasonal influenza vaccine (within 12 months, mandatory for pilgrims aged 60+ and those with chronic illnesses including diabetes and heart disease), and (3) COVID-19 vaccine (full primary course with WHO Emergency Use Listing-approved vaccines including Covishield, Covaxin, Pfizer, Moderna, or J&J). The Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH) updates vaccination requirements before each Hajj season at moh.gov.sa. The HCoI vaccination programme administers approved vaccines at designated State Haj House vaccination centres free of charge to registered Indian Hajj pilgrims.

Hajj Badal (proxy Hajj) is permissible in 3 specific conditions: when the intended pilgrim has died without performing obligatory Hajj, when the intended pilgrim has a permanent physical incapacity (severe disability, terminal illness, extreme old age) with no expectation of recovery, and when the intended pilgrim has the financial means but permanently cannot travel. The person performing Hajj Badal must have already performed their own obligatory Hajj. Hajj Badal is not permissible for healthy individuals who are financially capable but choose to defer — they must perform Hajj themselves. Indian families arrange Hajj Badal through licensed HGO operators who specialise in proxy Hajj services; cost ranges from ₹5,50,000–₹8,00,000 — equivalent to a standard private Hajj package.
