The Short Haj Package (15–17 days) bypasses the Madinah stay for pilgrims with time or health constraints. Return flights to India conclude approximately by 25–30 June 2027. Exact embarkation batch dates for each city are published by HCoI in March 2027.
Section 2
Which Route Should Indian Pilgrims Choose — HCoI or Private Tour Operator?
2 routes exist for Indian Muslims to perform Hajj: the Haj Committee of India (HCoI) government route and the Private Tour Operator (PTO) route — and the right choice depends entirely on 3 factors: budget, ability to wait for a ballot result, and preference for hotel proximity to Masjid al-Haram. HCoI holds 70% of India’s 1,75,025-seat quota; PTOs hold 30%. Both routes deliver the same Hajj rites — the difference is cost, comfort, and selection method.

What Are the India-Specific Requirements for Hajj 2027?
5 India-specific requirements apply to every Indian pilgrim performing Hajj 2027, regardless of whether they travel through HCoI or a Private Tour Operator. Missing any single requirement causes visa rejection or prevents departure from the embarkation city. Verify all 5 before paying any Hajj deposit.

What Is the Passport Validity Rule for Hajj 2027 from India?
Your passport must be valid until at least April 2028 to perform Hajj 2027 — 6 months beyond the expected return date of October 2027. This is the single most common reason Indian Hajj visa applications are rejected by the Saudi embassy in New Delhi. Renew your passport at a Passport Seva Kendra before the HCoI application opens (November 2026). Tatkal renewal takes 3–7 working days. See the full Hajj Passport Requirements for Indian Pilgrims for the complete document checklist.
Section 4
What Are the 12 Hajj Rites in Order — Complete Sequence for Indian Pilgrims?
Hajj consists of 12 ritual actions performed in a strict chronological sequence over 6 days (8–13 Dhul Hijjah), divided into 5 Arkan (pillars — obligatory, Hajj is invalid without them) and 7 Wajibat (obligations — missing one requires a Dam/sacrifice expiation). Indian pilgrims performing Tamattu‘ (the most common type for Indian pilgrims, which includes a preceding Umrah) complete all 12 rites below. The sequence cannot be rearranged — each rite depends on the completion of the prior one.
1
Before 8 Dhul Hijjah
Entering Ihram at the Miqat
Al-Ihram — Arkan (Pillar)
Ihram is the state of ritual consecration entered by declaring Niyyah (intention) for Hajj and pronouncing the Talbiyah. Indian pilgrims flying from Jeddah enter Ihram before crossing the Miqat boundary of Yalamlam (for flights from most Indian cities). Ihram garment for men: 2 unstitched white sheets. Ihram for women: any modest clothing without gloves or face covering. Entering Ihram prohibits 12 actions including cutting hair, applying fragrance, sexual relations, and hunting — until Halq/Taqsir on 10 Dhul Hijjah. The Talbiyah is repeated continuously from Ihram entry until the first Rami on 10 Dhul Hijjah.
Arkan
2
Upon Arrival in Makkah
Tawaf al-Qudum — Arrival Circumambulation
Tawaf al-Qudum — Wajib (for non-Makkah residents)
7 counter-clockwise circuits of the Kaaba are performed upon arriving in Makkah, starting and ending at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Pilgrims performing Tamattu‘ (who already completed Umrah before Hajj season) may skip Tawaf al-Qudum. The Tawaf pace: Raml (jogging) for the first 3 circuits for men, normal walking for the remaining 4. After Tawaf, 2 rak’ahs of prayer are performed at Maqam Ibrahim. This is a Wajib — missing it requires a Dam (sacrificial expiation).
Wajib
3
8 Dhul Hijjah (Yawm al-Tarwiyah)
Moving to Mina
Al-Mabeet bil-Mina — Wajib
On the morning of 8 Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims travel to Mina (approximately 8km from Masjid al-Haram) and spend the day and night in their assigned Maktab tent. The day in Mina is spent in prayer, Quran recitation, and rest before the physically demanding Day of Arafat. 5 Salah are prayed in Mina: Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha (of 8th), and Fajr (of 9th) — shortened (Qasr) but not combined. Overnight stay in Mina on 8th Dhul Hijjah is Sunnah, not Wajib, but most HCoI and PTO programs include it.
Wajib
4
9 Dhul Hijjah — Day of Arafat
Wuquf at Arafat — The Pillar of Hajj
Wuquf al-Arafat — Arkan (Pillar) — Hajj is INVALID without this
Wuquf (standing/presence) at Arafat from noon (Dhuhr) on 9 Dhul Hijjah until sunset is the singular most important rite of Hajj — the Prophet ﷺ said: “Hajj is Arafat.” Missing Wuquf entirely invalidates Hajj. The plain of Arafat (approximately 13km from Makkah) accommodates approximately 3 million pilgrims simultaneously. HCoI and PTO buses transport pilgrims from Mina to Arafat after Fajr. Dhuhr and Asr prayers are combined and shortened at Masjid al-Nimrah (the mosque on Arafat’s boundary). The time between Dhuhr and sunset at Arafat is the most powerful Du’a window of the entire year — spend it in sincere supplication, Dhikr, and Quran recitation. Pilgrims remain until sunset before departing — leaving early is prohibited.
Arkan
5
Night of 9–10 Dhul Hijjah
Overnight Stay at Muzdalifah
Al-Mabeet bil-Muzdalifah — Wajib
After sunset at Arafat, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah (midway between Arafat and Mina, approximately 9km from Arafat) and spend the night under the open sky. Maghrib and Isha prayers are combined and shortened at Muzdalifah. Pilgrims collect 70 pebbles (Hasaat) for the 3-day Rami rites — each pebble approximately the size of a chickpea. The elderly, sick, women with children, and mobility-impaired pilgrims are permitted by scholars to leave Muzdalifah after midnight rather than at Fajr — inform your tour operator in advance for bus logistics. HCoI provides Muzdalifah transport but timing varies by embarkation batch.
Wajib
6
10 Dhul Hijjah (Eid al-Adha) — Morning
Rami al-Jamarat — Stoning of the Large Pillar
Rami al-Jamarat al-Kubra — Wajib
On 10 Dhul Hijjah before noon, pilgrims stone only the large Jamarat pillar (Jamarat al-Aqabah/al-Kubra) with 7 consecutive pebbles, saying “Allahu Akbar” with each throw. The Jamarat Bridge in Mina has 3 levels with direct bridge access — use the level assigned by your HCoI Maktab or PTO to avoid extreme congestion. Only the large pillar is stoned on the 10th; all 3 pillars (small, medium, large) are stoned on days 11, 12, and 13. The Talbiyah stops at the first pebble thrown on the 10th.
Wajib
7
10 Dhul Hijjah — After Rami
Nahr — Animal Sacrifice (Qurbani)
Al-Nahr — Wajib (for Tamattu‘ and Qiran pilgrims)
Pilgrims performing Tamattu‘ must sacrifice 1 sheep or 1/7 share of a cow or camel on 10, 11, or 12 Dhul Hijjah — this is the Dam al-Shukr (gratitude sacrifice) for performing both Umrah and Hajj in one trip. HCoI organises group Qurbani through the Saudi Islamic Development Bank’s sacrifice voucher system — pilgrims purchase vouchers (approximately SAR 450–500) and the sacrifice is conducted by slaughterhouses across the region. Meat is distributed to eligible recipients by the Saudi government. Pilgrims do not need to be physically present at the slaughter.
Wajib
8
10 Dhul Hijjah — After Nahr
Halq or Taqsir — Head Shaving or Hair Shortening
Al-Halq aw al-Taqsir — Wajib
After Nahr (sacrifice), men shave the entire head (Halq — preferred) or shorten hair by at least 2.5cm (Taqsir). Women shorten hair by approximately 2.5cm — shaving is not required or recommended for women. Halq ends the major Ihram restrictions (prohibitions on fragrances, stitched clothing, and most personal grooming). The 1 remaining Ihram restriction after Halq — sexual relations — is lifted only after Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i. Barbers (Hallaqeen) operate at designated stations in Mina at controlled rates. Full guide:
Halq and Taqsir Guide for Pilgrims.
Wajib
9
10 Dhul Hijjah (or 11th/12th)
Tawaf al-Ifadah — The Obligatory Circumambulation
Tawaf al-Ziyarah — Arkan (Pillar) — Hajj is INVALID without this
Tawaf al-Ifadah is the obligatory 7-circuit circumambulation of the Kaaba performed after Halq — it is the second pillar of Hajj and must be completed before leaving Makkah permanently. Performed on 10, 11, or 12 Dhul Hijjah — performing it on 10 Dhul Hijjah is Sunnah. HCoI pilgrims travel by bus from Mina to Masjid al-Haram for this Tawaf. The Mataaf (Tawaf area) is at its most crowded on 10 Dhul Hijjah — pilgrims with mobility limitations may perform it on 11th or 12th when crowds are significantly lower. After Tawaf al-Ifadah, all Ihram restrictions are lifted.
Arkan
10
After Tawaf al-Ifadah
Sa’i — Walking Between Safa and Marwa
Al-Sa’i — Arkan (Pillar)
7 trips between the hills of Safa and Marwa (approximately 394m each way, total 2.76km) performed immediately after Tawaf al-Ifadah, beginning at Safa and ending at Marwa. Sa’i commemorates Hajar’s (AS) search for water for her infant Ismail (AS). The Mas’a (Sa’i corridor) in Masjid al-Haram is covered, air-conditioned, and has a wheelchair/trolley level for mobility-impaired pilgrims. Pilgrims performing Tamattu‘ who already completed Sa’i during their Umrah do not need to repeat it for Hajj — confirm with your scholar or operator which ruling applies to your specific Hajj type. Sa’i for Hajj, if required, is performed without Ihram restrictions (Ihram was lifted after Halq + Tawaf al-Ifadah).
Arkan
11
11, 12 (and optionally 13) Dhul Hijjah
Mina Nights and Daily Rami al-Jamarat
Ayyam al-Tashreeq — Wajib
Pilgrims return to Mina after Tawaf al-Ifadah and spend 2–3 nights (Ayyam al-Tashreeq) in their Maktab tents, stoning all 3 Jamarat pillars each day after noon. The 3-pillar stoning order: Small Jamarat (7 pebbles) → Medium Jamarat (7 pebbles) → Large Jamarat (7 pebbles). Total pebbles per day: 21. Du’a is made facing Qibla after the small and medium pillars but not after the large. Nafar Awwal (early departure) on 12 Dhul Hijjah is permitted for pilgrims who leave Mina before sunset on the 12th — most HCoI short package programmes use this option. Staying for 13 Dhul Hijjah (Nafar Thani) is more complete and preferred by scholars.
Wajib
12
Before Leaving Makkah
Tawaf al-Wida — Farewell Circumambulation
Tawaf al-Wida — Wajib (for non-Makkah residents)
Tawaf al-Wida is the final 7-circuit farewell circumambulation of the Kaaba, performed immediately before leaving Makkah for the return journey to India — it should be the last act performed in Makkah with no significant activities between Tawaf and departure. Performed without specific Ihram (regular clothing). Women in menstruation or post-natal bleeding are exempt from Tawaf al-Wida — they depart without performing it and no Dam (expiation) is required. HCoI group buses are scheduled around Tawaf al-Wida completion — inform your group leader if you need extended time at the Haram for this Tawaf.
Wajib
Understanding Arkan vs Wajibat
5 Arkan (pillars): Ihram, Wuquf at Arafat, Tawaf al-Ifadah, Sa’i, and Halq/Taqsir — missing any of these invalidates Hajj entirely and it must be repeated in a future year. 7 Wajibat (obligations): missing any one requires a Dam (animal sacrifice in Makkah) as expiation, but Hajj remains valid. Consult a qualified Islamic scholar for rulings on specific situations — allowances exist for the elderly, ill, and mobility-impaired in several Wajibat.
Section 5
What Vaccinations Are Mandatory for Hajj 2027 from India?
3 vaccinations are mandatory for all Indian Hajj pilgrims in 2027, administered under the HCoI’s Form HMF-1 health programme at state-level medical camps after ballot selection. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health can and does turn away pilgrims at the border who lack documented vaccination proof. The vaccination certificates are submitted to the Saudi embassy with the visa application — they cannot be obtained retroactively.
💊
Meningococcal ACYW135 Quadrivalent Vaccine
Mandatory for all pilgrims from all countries. Must be administered at least 10 days before arrival in Saudi Arabia. Provides protection for 3 years. The polysaccharide vaccine (Mencevax) is used for pilgrims aged 55+; the conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) for pilgrims under 55. Administered at HCoI district medical camps free of charge for selected pilgrims, or at certified travel clinics for PTO pilgrims (cost: approximately ₹800–₹1,200).
Mandatory
💊
Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV)
Mandatory for all Indian pilgrims, as India is classified as a polio-endemic country by WHO. 2 doses required (administered at least 4 weeks apart). Saudi authorities administer an additional OPV dose at the port of entry as a secondary measure. HCoI administers OPV at medical camps at no cost. PTO pilgrims must document their OPV dose at a recognised health centre and include the certificate with visa documents.
Mandatory
💊
Seasonal Influenza Vaccine
Mandatory for pilgrims aged 60 and above; strongly recommended for all pilgrims. The Saudi Ministry of Health updated influenza vaccination from “recommended” to “required” for elderly pilgrims from 2023 onwards. The trivalent or quadrivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) is accepted. Administered at HCoI medical camps or any pharmacy (cost: approximately ₹400–₹700).
Mandatory (60+)
✅
Pneumococcal Vaccine (PCV13 / PPSV23)
Strongly recommended for pilgrims aged 65+ and those with diabetes, chronic lung disease, or immunocompromising conditions. Not currently mandatory but included in HCoI’s health advisory. Pneumococcal disease is a leading cause of respiratory infection hospitalisation among elderly Hajj pilgrims. Cost at certified clinics: approximately ₹2,000–₹3,500.
Recommended
✅
Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B
Recommended for first-time travellers to Saudi Arabia and pilgrims with no prior Hepatitis vaccination history. Hepatitis A: 2-dose series (cost: approximately ₹1,200–₹2,000 per dose). Hepatitis B: 3-dose series (widely administered in India; most pilgrims under 40 have received it through the national immunisation programme). Not mandatory but reduces risk from communal accommodation and shared utensils.

Section 6
What Is the Maktab System and How Does It Affect Indian Pilgrims?
The Maktab is the Saudi-administered tent accommodation and service unit in Mina during Hajj — every pilgrim is assigned to 1 of 72 Maktab zones, each serving pilgrims of specific nationalities and operating as an independent mini-city with its own kitchen, medical station, transport, and toilets. HCoI pilgrims are assigned a Maktab number by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj — the pilgrim has no choice. PTO pilgrims’ Maktab is selected by the operator — always ask which Maktab number and zone before confirming your PTO booking.
Maktab proximity to the Jamarat Bridge determines walking distance for the 4 Rami stoning sessions — a critical factor for elderly and mobility-impaired pilgrims. Maktab categories range from Standard (basic facilities, farther Jamarat walk) to VIP/Special (better facilities, shorter Jamarat distance). Full Maktab category breakdown, proximity analysis, and what to ask your operator: Hajj Maktab Category Explained: What Indian Pilgrims Must Know.
Section 7
What Is the Total Cost of Hajj 2027 from India?
The total Hajj 2027 cost from India ranges from ₹4,50,000 to ₹10,00,000+ per person depending on the route (HCoI or PTO) and package tier (Economy to VIP 5-star). Cost components are the same across both routes: airfare, hotel accommodation in Makkah and Madinah, Mina tent (Maktab), ground transport, Qurbani voucher, visa fees, and meals. The variables are hotel distance from the Haram, room sharing, and level of personalised service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Hajj 2027 India — Common Questions Answered
Questions about Hajj 2027 for Indian pilgrims
When does the Hajj 2027 application open in India?
The HCoI Hajj 2027 application is expected to open in November 2026 and close in January 2027, based on HCoI’s consistent October–January application cycle. The exact dates are announced at hajcommittee.gov.in after Saudi Arabia communicates the 2027 quota allocation. Applications submitted after the official closing date are rejected under all circumstances. Full application process:
How to Apply for Hajj from India: HCoI Application Guide.
What is the difference between Tamattu, Qiran, and Ifrad Hajj?
3 types of Hajj exist: Tamattu‘, Qiran, and Ifrad. Tamattu‘ (the most common for Indian pilgrims): perform Umrah first, exit Ihram, then re-enter Ihram for Hajj on 8 Dhul Hijjah. A Qurbani (Dam al-Shukr) is obligatory. Qiran: enter Ihram for both Umrah and Hajj simultaneously from the Miqat and do not exit Ihram between them. A Qurbani is obligatory. Ifrad: enter Ihram for Hajj only, perform no Umrah as part of the same trip. No Qurbani required. Most Indian pilgrims and HCoI programmes use Tamattu‘.
Can women perform Hajj without a mahram from India?
Yes — women aged 45 and above can perform Hajj from India without a mahram under the HCoI’s LWM (Ladies Without Mahram) category. They must travel in a supervised group of minimum 4 women from the same state, organised under HCoI supervision. Women under 45 must travel with a confirmed mahram (husband, father, adult son, or brother). This rule applies to the HCoI route. For PTO Hajj, the mahram requirement follows Saudi Arabia’s visa policy, which from 2021 onwards allows women of any age to apply for Hajj visa without a mahram under the Saudi Hajj Ministry’s updated rules — confirm with your PTO before applying.
How many days does Hajj take for Indian pilgrims including travel?
Full HCoI Hajj takes 35–40 days in Saudi Arabia for Indian pilgrims: approximately 8–12 days in Madinah first, then 25–30 days in Makkah (including the 6-day Hajj ritual period of 8–13 Dhul Hijjah). The HCoI Short Haj Package compresses the total to 15–17 days by eliminating the Madinah stay and shortening the Makkah pre- and post-Hajj period. PTO packages range from 15 days (economy short) to 45 days (premium full). Indian pilgrims departing from distant embarkation cities (e.g., Kolkata or Guwahati) may add 1–2 extra transit days.
What is the Short Haj Package and how does it differ from the full HCoI package?
The Short Haj Package (SHP) is a 15–17 day condensed HCoI programme that covers only the mandatory Hajj rites without the traditional Madinah visit and extended Makkah stay. It costs approximately the same as the regular HCoI package (₹4,50,000–₹5,50,000) but is designed for pilgrims with medical conditions, work constraints, or who cannot handle 40-day travel. All 12 obligatory Hajj rites are completed in the SHP. The Madinah visit, while not obligatory for Hajj validity, is missed entirely. SHP seats are limited and are allocated preferentially to elderly pilgrims aged 70+.
